Effective Goal Setting

6 steps for effective goal setting

1. Write your goals down

You are more likely to achieve your goals if they are written down. Having a loose idea of what you wish to accomplish without writing them down, could mean they are always out of reach. Writing them down reinforces your plans and helps you to visualise them as realistic and achievable. If you are feeling creative, putting together a vision board is another great way to reinforce your belief in reaching your goals.

2. Break your main goal down into smaller goals

There are many benefits to breaking down your main goal into smaller achievable goals. By having a written action plan of the steps you are to take to achieve your main goal, it becomes far more realistic. This is because your focus is then on achieving each individual step. If you don’t do this, there is the possibility of feeling overwhelmed by your main goal, if it seems too far away and may feel too difficult to achieve.

3. Find someone to hold you accountable

Whether you employ the services of a life coach or ask someone supportive in your life, finding a person to hold you accountable for achieving your goals will help to keep you on track. Surrounding yourself with positive people, who encourage and believe in you, is a key step in helping you to move forward.

4. Review your goals on a consistent basis

Take time, ideally each week, to regularly review your goals and where you are in relation to your end result. Check whether your smaller goals are still relevant and this should be reflected in your action plan. Maybe following a different path is best for reaching your main goal. Assess your target date too and whether it is still achievable in the time frame you have set. Following an unrealistic action plan can result in you feeling anxious and possibly lead to feelings of failure. Don’t push yourself too much, a little steady progress is the best way forward.

5. Reward yourself along the way

Give yourself little rewards on your journey towards your goals. Each time you complete a step on your action plan, celebrate your achievements and reward yourself. In doing so, this gives you a sense of success and supports your motivation to move forward onto your next step. Your journey to your main goal is to be enjoyed and your rewards will help you with this.

6. Be gentle with yourself

Last, but by no means least, make sure you are looking after your wellbeing. You don’t want the process of reaching your goals to be at the detriment of your health. Take regular time out for exercise, meditation, socialising and doing activities that make you happy and fulfilled. Make sure you follow a good sleep routine and rest when you feel you need it. Pursuing your dreams and taking steps to achieve them is great, but it’s vital you find a good balance along the way.

I do hope you find this guide for effective goal setting useful. Investing your time into carrying out these steps is a great way to support your journey. Remember, you can achieve anything you put your focus on. Good luck and have fun!
