What is the Spiritual Meaning of the Summer Solstice?

The summer solstice is the time in the year when we have the most amount of daylight and the least amount of darkness. This happens when the earth’s axis is tilted at its closest point from the sun, resulting in the sun being at its highest point in the sky and giving us the longest amount of sunlight in the year. This significant period has been celebrated for thousands of years. So, what is the spiritual meaning of the summer solstice and how do we apply this to our lives?

The solstice derives its name from the latin words sol (sun) and sistere (stand still). The summer solstice is the time of the year when the position of the sun rising and setting stands still on the horizon. It is thought the celebration of the longest day goes back as far as the Neolithic period, meaning people have been celebrating the summer solstice for thousands of years. In the Northern Hemisphere, the summer solstice usually falls on 21st June. In the Southern Hemisphere, it usually falls on the 21st December.

What is the Spiritual Meaning of the Summer Solstice?

Winter is a time of darkness and bringing our attention inward, as we rest and rejuvenate, and make plans for the months ahead of us. The spring brings an awakening to our soul, as we shift from the darkness and prepare for the energies of the longer, brighter and warmer days that the sun provides. The days become longer, giving us more hours of sunlight, and warmer, as spring turns to summer. As we build up to the longest day, our mind, body and soul become more energised.

With the most amount of daylight hours in the year, the summer solstice is a powerful time for healing, as the sun is at its most potent. The sun’s energies at this time are strong, invigorating and empowering, bringing increased creativity and positivity. Abundance and prosperity in many forms, are also connected with the summer solstice.

How do we Apply the Spiritual Meaning of the Summer Solstice to our Lives?

How you choose to celebrate or tap into the energies of the summer solstice will be personal to you, the path you are currently on and your own journey. Here are some suggestions for how you can connect with and utilise the solstice’s amazing energies and light:

  • Be in the moment – use this solstice period to be silent and still. You may choose to meditate as the sun rises, or be mindful as you go about your day.
  • Show gratitude – Acknowledge the strength and power of the sun throughout the year, particularly at this time when it is at its strongest, providing abundance and bringing growth. Take a moment to appreciate the sun and all it provides. You may also want to use this time to embrace your gratitude practice and spend time writing down all you are grateful for in your life.
  • Reconnect with yourself and nature – You might choose to spend time during the solstice reconnecting with yourself and with nature. Going for a walk in a park, a woodland, a nature reserve, or along a river path, around a lake or along a coastal path, will give you the opportunity to use the energies of the summer solstice to reconnect. Or you may simply choose to meditate in your garden, in a quiet spot where you won’t be disturbed.
  • Let go – Tap into the strength of the energies around at this time and let go of all that is no longer serving you. This can be incredibly healing for every level of your wellbeing.
  • Get creative – The summer solstice is a great time for getting creative. Setting new goals and beginning new projects is particularly powerful at this time, as you work with the energies of the solstice.
  • Set new intentions – The summer solstice signifies abundance in many forms, so use this time to set new intentions and create abundance in your life. Use the Law of Attraction and work to manifest your dreams and desires.
